National Hardwood Flooring & Moulding supplies custom staircases and stair components to contractors, homeowners, and designers throughout Southern California. Our Van Nuys location stocks stair treads, risers, handrails, balusters, and newel posts for residential and commercial staircase projects. As a staircase supplier serving the Los Angeles area since 1984, we provide materials for conventional stairs, floating staircases, spiral staircase, and custom wood stairs in multiple species and configurations.
Our stair components support construction of multiple staircase styles and configurations.

Conventional staircases feature closed stringers with treads and risers installed between supporting side boards. This construction style suits most residential and commercial applications. Conventional stairs can be carpeted, finished with hardwood treads and risers, or built with painted risers and stained treads.
We stock treads and risers in standard dimensions for conventional staircase construction. Custom sizes are available for non-standard stair widths and rise-to-run specifications.
Floating staircases create an open appearance with treads supported by a central stringer or wall-mounted brackets. The design eliminates visible side stringers and often omits risers for a minimalist look. Floating stairs require structural engineering to ensure adequate support for each tread.
Our custom stair services include tread fabrication for floating staircase designs. We work with contractors and designers on tread sizing, species selection, and finish specifications for floating stair projects.
Open-riser staircases omit the vertical riser boards between treads. The design allows light to pass through the staircase and creates a less formal appearance than closed-riser construction. Building codes in some jurisdictions restrict open-riser stairs based on the gap size between treads.
We supply treads with finished edges for open-riser installations. Bullnose, eased edge, and square edge profiles are available depending on the design specification.
Custom wood stairs accommodate non-standard configurations including curved stairs, spiral stairs, and stairs with landings and direction changes. We work with architects and contractors on material specifications for custom staircase projects.
Custom staircase components require detailed measurements and coordination with the installation team. Contact our sales staff to discuss custom stair requirements and lead times.
Stair treads, risers, and components are available in multiple hardwood species.
Red oak and white oak remain the most requested species for residential stair treads. Oak provides hardness suitable for foot traffic and accepts stains in a range of colors. The grain pattern displays through clear and stained finishes.
Hard maple offers a lighter appearance than oak with a tight grain pattern. Maple treads suit contemporary designs and spaces with light-colored flooring. The density of maple provides durability for high-traffic staircases.
American black walnut provides a darker appearance without staining. The brown tones with purple and gray undertones suit formal and contemporary designs. Walnut costs more than oak but delivers a distinctive appearance.
Hickory offers high hardness ratings and significant color variation within each board. The species suits rustic and country design applications. Hickory treads resist wear in active households.
We stock and order stair components in Brazilian cherry, mahogany, teak, and other imported hardwoods. Exotic species provide color profiles and hardness ratings not available in domestic options.

Our inventory includes components for complete staircase construction and renovation.
Stair treads form the horizontal walking surface of each step. We stock treads in standard widths of 36 inches, 42 inches, and 48 inches. Custom widths are available for non-standard stair dimensions.
Tread thicknesses range from 3/4 inch to 1-1/2 inches depending on the staircase construction and support system. Thicker treads suit floating stair designs and retrofit installations over existing stairs.
Tread edge profiles include square, eased, bullnose, and return options. Return treads wrap around the open side of staircases for a finished appearance.
Stair risers form the vertical surface between treads. We stock risers in 1/2-inch and 3/4-inch thicknesses in oak, maple, poplar, and other species. Poplar risers suit painted applications where the riser color contrasts with stained treads.
Starting steps at the base of staircases often feature larger dimensions and bullnose returns on one or both sides. Landing treads cover intermediate platforms where stairs change direction. We supply both components in stock and custom configurations.

Our stair parts inventory includes railing components for code-compliant and decorative installations.
Handrails provide grip support along staircases and landings. We stock handrail profiles in round, oval, and contemporary shapes. Standard handrail lengths of 8, 10, and 12 feet suit most residential applications.
Handrail fittings including volutes, turnouts, goosenecks, and easings connect handrail sections at turns and transitions. We stock fittings to match our handrail profiles.
Balusters provide the vertical fill between handrails and stair treads or base rails. We stock turned balusters in traditional profiles and square balusters for contemporary designs. Metal balusters in iron and stainless steel are available for mixed-material railings.
Building codes specify maximum spacing between balusters based on the opening size. Standard baluster spacing uses two or three balusters per tread depending on the tread length.
Newel posts anchor railing systems at the top, bottom, and turns of staircases. We stock box newels, turned newels, and contemporary square posts in multiple sizes. Post caps and finials complete the top of newel posts.
Starting newels at the base of stairs often feature larger dimensions than intermediate posts. We stock both sizes in matching styles for coordinated railing systems.
Our showroom displays stair component samples and photos of completed staircase installations. Visitors can view tread species, handrail profiles, and baluster styles while consulting with staff on product selection.
