What is Ipe wood?

Ipe (pronounced EE-pay) is a tropical hardwood native to Brazil, Peru, and Bolivia — also called Brazilian Walnut, Ironwood, and Lapacho negro. The tree takes 40 to 100 years to reach harvestable size. That slow growth produces the extraordinarily tight grain, extreme density, and natural oil content that makes Ipe the most durable commercial timber species on earth.

Why Ipe works especially well in Southern California

Wildfire zones and Class A fire rating

Ipe is one of the only natural wood species that achieves a Class A fire rating per ASTM E84 — without chemical treatment. Pressure-treated pine, cedar, redwood, and composite decking are all rated Class C. Ipe’s extreme density makes it highly resistant to ember ignition, which is the primary mechanism by which homes ignite during wildfires.

Many LA County, Ventura County, and San Bernardino County municipalities restrict combustible decking in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones. Ipe’s Class A rating satisfies most California fire zone requirements for zones beyond the immediate structure zone. Always verify with your local building department.

Coastal salt air and termites

Ipe’s natural oil content makes it impervious to salt air corrosion. Southern California also has one of the highest subterranean and drywood termite pressures in the US. Ipe heartwood is naturally resistant to termite attack without any chemical treatment — earning the highest termite resistance rating from the US Naval Research Laboratory.

San Fernando Valley temperature extremes

Ipe’s dimensional stability after manufacture is rated small — approximately 1/16 inch of movement on a 6-inch board between extreme wet and dry seasons. This far exceeds the stability of composite decking, which can expand significantly in the 110°F+ summer temperatures common in the Valley and Inland Empire.

Ipe installation: what you must know

Pre-drill every fastener hole — no exceptions
You cannot drive a screw into Ipe without pre-drilling. Attempting to do so will split the board or snap the screw. Use carbide-tipped bits sized to 7/8 of the screw diameter. Drill holes as far from board ends as possible to minimize end splits.

Use only T305 or T316 stainless steel fasteners
Ipe’s natural tannins react with zinc and uncoated steel, producing permanent black staining. Use T305 stainless inland, T316 within a mile of the coast. Screws minimum 2.5 inches long.

Never build over concrete without ventilation
Concrete holds moisture and transmits it upward. Even moisture-resistant Ipe will cup or crown over time when moisture is trapped with no airflow. The substructure must be elevated and ventilated.

Seal all cut ends immediately
Apply an aqueous wax-based end sealer immediately after every cut. End checking — cracking at the board ends — is almost entirely preventable with proper end sealing.

Carbide tooling only
Standard high-speed steel saw blades dull within one or two cuts on Ipe. Carbide-tipped blades and drill bits are required for clean cuts and to avoid burning from friction heat.

Frequently asked questions

Correct. Ipe does not require sealing, staining, or chemical treatment for structural integrity. Its natural oil content and density provide intrinsic resistance to rot, insects, and moisture. Sealing or oiling is purely cosmetic — done only to maintain the original brown color. An unfinished Ipe deck weathers to silver-gray but remains structurally sound for its full lifespan.
Yes. Ipe achieves a Class A fire rating per ASTM E84 — the same rating as steel and concrete — without chemical treatment. This satisfies most California fire zone requirements beyond the immediate structure zone. Always verify with your local building department for Zone 0 requirements where non-combustible materials may still be needed.
The greenish dust is from natural extractives and pigments in the Lapacho group of Ipe. It is actually a quality indicator — genuine high-quality Ipe produces this distinctive dust. It is a mild respiratory irritant. Always wear an N95 respirator when cutting Ipe and work in a ventilated area.
Ipe outperforms composite decking on hardness, fire rating, per-year lifecycle cost, and natural authenticity. Composite outperforms Ipe on upfront material cost and DIY installation ease. For projects where fire rating, extreme durability, or real wood matter — Ipe wins. For projects where lowest upfront cost is the priority — composite is more practical.
Ipe sawdust is a mild respiratory and skin irritant during cutting and sanding — wear a respirator and work in ventilated areas. Once installed, Ipe poses no toxicity risk. It is used in high-traffic public boardwalks and parks where millions walk barefoot on it annually without issue.
